First run

Six steps from installed to your first lesson.

1. Start the app

The control panel appears. It is a graphical shell that starts and stops the backend — it starts the same backend and reimplements nothing.

2. Choose a data folder

The panel suggests ~/ilearnassist; click to accept it, or pick somewhere else.

This is where your database, workspaces and uploads will live. The panel remembers your choice.

3. Create a superadmin

Pick a username and password. This is the highest-privilege account on the machine — remember it.

If you forget it: the control panel has Reset administrator password, and it works with the server stopped.

4. Open the app

The server starts automatically. Click Open app, then sign in with the account you just created.

Firewall

If your firewall asks on first launch, allow the app to communicate on the local machine (127.0.0.1). Nothing is exposed by default — reaching the app from a phone requires you to switch on LAN sharing in the control panel.

5. Paste a model API key

Go to Platform console → Model services, pick a provider you already have access to, paste its API key and save.

Until you do, the model list is empty

The assistant needs a language model to work. A provider with no key never appears in the model picker — better than offering a provider that does nothing when you click it. See Model providers.

6. Start learning

Go back to the home screen, create a workspace, open a conversation, choose the Guided Learning assistant, and tell it what you want to learn.
